Gary Walden, School Education Director for Macarthur in South Western Sydney was highly respected by students, teachers, parents, the business community, State and Federal Politicians for the significant impact he made in the lives of children with special needs. He was very proactive and contributed significant time and resources to community, educational and sporting programs. Gary was very passionate about making sure all children with special needs were supported, particularly those where a funding source that matched their learning, behavioural or mental health need was not otherwise available.

The Gary Walden Trust was established as a not-for-profit, community based, non-government organisation to make a difference for special needs students in Public Schools in South Western Sydney.

The Trust, was set up in February 2007, following Gary’s passing to continue the work that he pioneered. Run solely by volunteers, the Trust started with $10,000.00, contributed by mourners in lieu of flowers and has relied on fundraising and donations since its commencement. All funds raised by the Trust are directed back into the community to enhance the learning of children with special needs through grants to purchase resources and fund creative programs. Each year the number of requests for funding far exceeds the money raised
